OFF-PISTE vs. Airbnb: What You're Actually Booking, and Who's Accountable for It

It's a fair question, and one we'd rather answer directly than dance around: for a week in a French Alps chalet, could you just book it on Airbnb instead? Sometimes, yes. But there are real, practical differences in what you're actually buying, and they matter more for a group trip with real money on the line than they do for a weekend studio in a city you already know.

The first difference is who you're actually contracting with. Airbnb is a marketplace: it connects you to an independent host, and the quality of your stay, and the platform's own terms confirm this, depends entirely on that individual host rather than on Airbnb itself. OFF-PISTE works differently. We personally select and inspect every chalet in our collection, negotiate directly with each owner, and sell you the stay in our own name. Your contract is with us, one accountable party, not with a stranger whose responsiveness and standards you're trusting sight unseen.

The second difference shows up when something actually goes wrong. If an Airbnb host cancels before your stay, Airbnb's own policy guarantees a refund, but finding you a comparable replacement is only offered "depending on availability at comparable pricing," with no guarantee one exists. Our terms take a different position: if a chalet becomes unavailable for reasons outside our control, we offer a comparable substitute chalet of the same standard or better at no additional cost, or a full refund, full stop. That's a commitment from an accountable company, not a best effort from a marketplace standing between you and someone else's calendar.

The third is money, and how clearly it's handled. Your Total Price is fixed once we issue a Booking Confirmation and won't increase except for new taxes passed through at cost. A 30% deposit secures your stay, the balance is due 60 days out, and any security deposit, typically $2,000 to $10,000 depending on the chalet, is disclosed upfront and returned within 14 days of departure, with documented evidence for any deduction. None of that replaces the travel insurance we'd still recommend for trip cancellation and medical coverage, but it does mean you know exactly what you're agreeing to before you pay anything.

The last difference is the one we think matters most, and it's harder to put a number on: a person, not a listing. Every OFF-PISTE stay comes with a dedicated contact before and during your trip and an arrival coordinated with the on-site team, included at no extra cost. From there, our concierge levels can arrange a private chef, transfers, ski lessons, or childcare, planned in advance rather than pieced together once you land, the same way a good local friend would handle it, not an algorithm matching you to the next available listing.
