Courchevel is the name everyone knows, and for good reason. Opened in 1946 and celebrating its 80th winter this season, it was one of the first ski resorts in the world designed from scratch for skiing: the Saulire cable car in 1952, the mountain airstrip in 1961, and early on, the link with Méribel that grew into Les 3 Vallées. Today that network is about 600 km (373 miles) of linked runs shared with Méribel and Val Thorens, the largest connected ski area in the world. Courchevel's own valley holds around 150 km of it.
What sets Courchevel apart is the care. The runs are groomed like few others in the Alps, the lifts are among the most modern in Europe, and lines are rare even in February. Off the slopes, the resort counts seven Michelin-starred restaurants with eleven stars between them, from two-star tables to a new first star at L'Altitude. Courchevel 1850, with its palace hotels and boutiques, made the reputation, and it lives up to it.
What most first-time visitors do not know is that Courchevel is six villages, at different altitudes and with different moods, all on the same pass and linked by free shuttle buses. Ivory is in La Tania, the quietest of them, in the forest between Courchevel and Méribel. Many of our guests ski into 1850 for lunch, and come home in the evening to a calm village in the trees.
Courchevel is also looking ahead: it will host events of the 2030 Winter Olympics, on the Olympic ski jump at Le Praz and on its slopes. Booking a week here in the next few winters means seeing the resort at its most ambitious.

La Tania
A quiet village in the forest, between Courchevel and Méribel. This is where Chalet Ivory is.
Chalet Ivory is in La Tania, at about 1,400 m (4,595 ft), a village built in the forest for the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics and now one of the six villages of Courchevel. It sits between the Courchevel and Méribel valleys, with lifts toward both: the La Tania gondola and the Bouc Blanc chairlift climb toward Courchevel, and the slopes above lead over to Méribel. The whole of Les 3 Vallées starts at the door.
The chalet is ski-in, ski-out: the lift is just across a small road. At the end of the day, easy runs through the larch and fir bring you back to the village, including the blue Arolles and the green Plan Fontaine. At the foot of the slopes, two free magic carpets welcome children taking their first turns.
La Tania itself is small and relaxed: a few restaurants and bars, ski shops and very little traffic. It is growing quietly, with a new design hotel and spa due to open soon, but it keeps the feel of a mountain village rather than a resort center.
By road, Courchevel 1850 is about 15 minutes away and Moûtiers train station about 20. Free shuttle buses connect the Courchevel villages throughout the season, and for an evening in 1850 we arrange a driver.

The Skiing
The numbers: Les 3 Vallées counts about 600 km of runs, 334 marked pistes (53 green, 136 blue, 108 red, 37 black) and around 160 lifts, from 1,300 m in Le Praz to 3,230 m on the Cime Caron above Val Thorens, all on one pass. Courchevel's own valley has around 150 km of runs, and about half of them are green or blue.
Beginners are particularly well looked after. Courchevel has ten free lifts serving six Easy Ski learning areas at the foot of the slopes, marked with pink stars on the piste map, and a Mini Pass for about fifteen easy runs. In Moriond, the Ariondaz gondola leads to a plateau made for first days; in 1850, the Jardin Alpin run is a classic. ESF group lessons for children now take place in fenced, dedicated areas, and the Children's Village in 1850 even offers night skiing on floodlit slopes.
For private lessons, a new premium option this season gives skiers with an instructor priority access to five key lifts and a weekly First Tracks session on freshly groomed slopes before the area opens. We book instructors before you arrive, matched to each skier's level and language.
Intermediates can cruise for a week without repeating a run, across to Méribel and on to Val Thorens; the new sun terrace at the top of Les Chenus, facing the Saulire, is the place to stop. Experts have the Saulire couloirs, the World Cup black run on the Éclipse slope and vast off-piste terrain; ski it only with a qualified guide, which we can arrange.
One honest note: at 1,400 m, La Tania is one of the lower villages in the area. Its forest is a gift on snowy or flat-light days, but in a warm spring the last runs into the village soften first. The high sectors of Courchevel and Méribel stay reliable.

For American skiers
France grades runs on four colors instead of three. Green and blue are beginner and easy, much like at home. A red sits between an American blue and black. A French black is the hardest on the mountain, comparable to a black or double-black diamond.

Beyond the Slopes
Horse-drawn sleigh rides
A slow ride through the snow-covered forest, wrapped in blankets, with the bells of the horses as the only sound. A favorite with children and grandparents alike, especially at the end of the afternoon.
Fera Lumia, the night toboggan run
The historic toboggan run from Courchevel 1850 down to Courchevel Village reopens this winter with a new design. After dark, light installations trace a glowing path through the fir trees.
Sunset Closing
With the Courchevel mountain guides, one last run down the empty slopes after the lifts have closed, followed by a snack at altitude as the sun goes down over Les 3 Vallées.
Aquamotion
A large aquatic and wellness center in Courchevel, with pools, slides for children and a spa for adults. The right place for a stormy afternoon, or for legs that need a rest.
Scenic flights from the altiport
Courchevel's mountain airstrip, one of the most famous in the world, offers short flights over the peaks by plane or helicopter, weather permitting. Mont Blanc on a clear day is the highlight.

Courchevel in summer
In July and August, Courchevel becomes a different resort: lakes and flowered pastures, high trails into the Vanoise National Park, mountain refuges, and the Col de la Loze, one of the most famous climbs of the Tour de France. La Tania, in the forest, is a cool and quiet base, and guided wellness days mix hiking, yoga and breathwork around Le Praz, La Rosière and Montcharvet.
Lakes and hiking
Easy walks to the Lac de la Rosière, with its turquoise water and forest all around, and longer days to the Lacs Merlet, on the edge of the Vanoise National Park.
A night in a mountain refuge
Dinner and a night at altitude in a mountain hut, far from any road, with the sunrise over the lakes the next morning. Simple, memorable for children, and easy to organize with us.
The Col de la Loze by bike
The road climb between Courchevel and Méribel, made famous by the Tour de France. Steep, beautiful and closed to cars near the top, it is a goal for any serious cyclist.
Golf
A mountain course with views across the Vanoise, open in summer. A relaxed round between two hiking days, with the thin air giving every drive a few more yards.
Yoga by the lake
Morning sessions outdoors, in the calm of early summer, and guided wellness days that mix walking, yoga and breathwork around Le Praz, La Rosière and Montcharvet.
Mountain biking
Lift-served trails above the villages for confident riders, and forest tracks around La Tania for families. Bikes, including electric ones, can be delivered to the chalet.

Courchevel's high sectors and the upper slopes of Les 3 Vallées hold snow well from early December to mid-April. La Tania, at about 1,400 m in the forest, is at its best in mid-winter, when the trees shelter the runs on snowy days.

From the United States, fly overnight to Geneva, nonstop in about 8 hours from New York (United from Newark, SWISS from JFK) or Washington Dulles (United). The transfer to La Tania takes about 2 h 30. Lyon (about 2 h 15) and Chambéry (about 1 h 30) are good alternatives on the European side. From Boston and most other US cities, connect once in Europe, or fly nonstop to Paris and continue by TGV.
Moûtiers station, about 20 minutes from La Tania, is served by TGV trains from Paris and by seasonal trains from London. For a faster arrival, Courchevel has its own altiport for private planes and helicopters. Whichever route you choose, we arrange the transfer, timed to your actual arrival.

Is Courchevel a good choice for families and beginners?
Yes. About half of Courchevel's runs are green or blue, and the resort has free beginner lifts and Easy Ski areas in several villages. In La Tania, two free magic carpets sit at the foot of the slopes and the runs home are easy. We book lessons and childcare before you arrive.
How does Courchevel compare to Méribel and Val Thorens?
All three share Les 3 Vallées, so one pass covers them. Courchevel has the most refined dining and the best-groomed slopes, Méribel sits in the middle with a classic chalet village, and Val Thorens, at 2,300 m, has the most reliable snow and a livelier crowd. From La Tania you can ski to all three in a day.
Is the snow reliable at Christmas and Easter?
For the ski area, yes: Les 3 Vallées reaches 3,230 m, and Courchevel's high sectors hold snow well through the season. La Tania, at about 1,400 m, is lower: late in a warm season the last runs into the village can soften, while the slopes above stay open. The season typically runs from early December to mid-April.
How do we get to Courchevel from the US?
Fly overnight to Geneva, nonstop in about 8 hours from New York or Washington Dulles, then a private transfer of about 2 h 30 to La Tania. From other US cities, connect in Europe or fly to Paris and take the TGV to Moûtiers, 20 minutes from the chalet. A helicopter transfer to Courchevel's altiport is also possible.
Is Chalet Ivory ski-in, ski-out?
Yes. The lift is just across a small road from the chalet, and easy runs bring you back to La Tania at the end of the day.
Can you arrange a private chef, ski instructors or childcare?
Yes, from a single celebratory dinner to every meal of your stay, matched to your group's tastes and any dietary needs, and arranged before you arrive rather than negotiated once you're there. Yes, all three. Equipment is fitted and delivered to the chalet before you arrive, lessons are private or small-group and arranged around your schedule, and childcare is vetted and briefed on your children's routine in advance.
How far ahead should we book?
For Christmas, New Year and the February school holidays, as early as you can: many returning guests rebook their week a year ahead. For other weeks, a few weeks' notice is often enough, and we tell you honestly what is still available. A 30% deposit secures the dates, with the balance due 60 days before arrival.
What's the difference between Courchevel 1850 and La Tania?
They are two villages of the same resort, on the same lift pass. Courchevel 1850 is the famous one, with palace hotels, boutiques and starred restaurants. La Tania, lower and in the forest, is quieter and more relaxed, with lifts toward both Courchevel and Méribel. You can ski into 1850 for lunch and come home to a calm village.
