A note for American skiers: France grades pistes on a four-color scale rather than the three most US resorts use. Green and blue are beginner and easy, much like at home. A red run sits between an American blue and black, more demanding than an easy intermediate but short of a true black diamond. Black runs are the hardest on the mountain, comparable to an American black or double-black diamond.
Tignes sits at 2,100 meters, high enough that the snow is dependable from late November into May, which is why it is one of the few French resorts where a Christmas or Easter trip is nearly as safe a bet as one in February. Linked to Val d'Isère, it forms the Tignes–Val d'Isère ski area, long known as the Espace Killy: 300 kilometers of piste across 154 marked runs — 22 green, 61 blue, 46 red, and 25 black — served by around 80 lifts, with skiable terrain reaching 3,456 meters on the Grande Motte glacier, where skiing is still possible in summer.
It isn't a postcard village in the way Courchevel 1850 or Megève are, the architecture is more functional than storybook, which is exactly why it works so well for groups who came for the mountain, not the window-shopping. Our OFF-PISTE Collection sits in its own quiet cluster above the resort, with the seven chalets sharing a spa, indoor pool, and cinema room, so a family reunion or a group of friends can spread across two or three chalets and still gather in one place every evening.
One detail worth knowing before you go: Tignes and Val d'Isère are two separate resorts on a shared lift network, not one village, so a few of the runs back to your chalet involve a short, well-marked link piste rather than a straight run home. It's a five-minute adjustment, not a real inconvenience, and it's exactly the kind of thing we walk every group through before the trip so nothing on the mountain comes as a surprise.
