Booking Christmas Week: Why It's Already Later Than You Think

Christmas and New Year week isn’t priced or booked like a normal week in the Alps, and it’s worth understanding why before you assume there’s plenty of time. Chalets across our four destinations see returning international guests rebook their exact dates as much as a year in advance, often before they’ve even left the previous year’s stay.

By the time a first-time visitor starts comparing options in October or November, the best chalets for their group size and dates are often already gone. Not because of artificial scarcity, but because the family who had it last year asked for it again. Here is how the holiday weeks actually work, and how to plan around them.

The French school holidays decide everything. For 2026, they run from Saturday, December 19 to Monday, January 4, 2027, and the dates are the same in all three French school zones.¹ Chalets rent Saturday to Saturday, so the holidays split into two very different weeks.

If your dates are flexible, the week after New Year is one of the best-kept secrets of the season. The holiday crowd leaves, the snow is usually settled, and many chalets open back up. WeSki suggests booking six to nine months ahead for the widest choice of chalets and flights, and notes that some regular Christmas skiers book as early as January for the following December.² Our experience matches: the chalets that suit large families best are the first to go.

So where does that leave you in October? Still in the game, with less choice. Groups of eight to twelve find options more easily than groups of sixteen or more, and the New Year week goes before the Christmas week. If one of the two weeks works for you, tell us early which one, and we’ll check both.

Flights follow the same logic. WeSki also suggests arriving on the 22nd or 23rd rather than on Christmas Eve, when a delay is harder to absorb.² With a Saturday changeover, that means planning one night on the way, a good excuse for a day in Geneva, Lyon or Paris.

Altitude is the single most important factor for late-December snow. WeSki recommends resorts with villages above 1,800 meters, and most of the skiing above 2,000 meters, for the most reliable Christmas conditions.² That is where our destinations differ:

Tignes opens on November 21, 2026 and its ski area climbs to 3,456 meters.^3,4 In the 3 Vallées, Val Thorens opens on November 21 and Courchevel on December 4; 85% of the ski area sits above 1,800 meters, and more than 2,800 snowmakers cover about 55% of the slopes.⁵ For a Christmas trip where snow matters most, we usually point families to Tignes or Val Thorens first.

Christmas and New Year are peak weeks for French ski schools. At ESF Tignes, for example, peak season runs from December 20, 2026 to January 2, 2027, and a six-day group course costs €409 for the 2026-27 season.⁶ Group classes fill first, private instructors soon after. The simple rule: book lessons the week you confirm the chalet. Our booking terms reflect how far out this planning happens. A 30% deposit secures the dates, and the balance is due 60 days before arrival. If you book within 10 weeks of arrival, the full amount is due at booking, which is common for last-minute Christmas inquiries. The holidays are when a chalet earns its place over a hotel: a long table, your own tree, and nobody else’s schedule.
