What a First-Time Ski Trip to France Actually Costs

American ski resorts train you to think in one number: the day ticket. France doesn’t price a ski week that way. A week in the Alps is built from a handful of separate pieces, and once you know what they are, and what each one costs, the total stops feeling opaque.

Here is each line item for the 2026-27 season, with real published prices where they exist, and an honest word on the ones that depend on your group.

This is the good news. In the French Alps, a 6-day adult pass costs less than two peak days at a large US resort. At Vail, a single peak-day walk-up ticket reaches $374 this season.¹ In Tignes, six days on the whole Tignes-Val d’Isère ski area cost €468, about $520.²

Prices depend on the size of the ski area. Here is what a week costs at each of our destinations:

Two details matter for families. In Tignes-Val d’Isère, children under 8 ski free, and a family buying four 6-day passes or more, with at least two adults and two children, gets €330 off.² In the 3 Vallées, the Family Flex offer lets a group of one or two adults with children all pay the child rate.³

Choosing between a single valley and the full area is a real decision in Courchevel and Val Thorens. The Courchevel Valley pass costs €385 for six days,⁴ the Val Thorens-Orelle pass €367.50;⁵ the full 3 Vallées, €421.³ For beginners and young children, the valley pass is often all you need. Lessons are the second line item, and they book early in the holidays. At the ESF in Tignes, six group lessons cost €409 in 2026-27.⁶ At the ESF in Courchevel 1850, six half-day group lessons cost €395, and a private 2½-hour morning costs €380.⁷ In La Clusaz, group lessons for five or six half-days start at €186 to €215.⁸

Rental prices vary widely with the shop, the level of equipment and the season, and the major chains publish them only inside their booking tools. One rule holds everywhere: booking online, ahead of time, is usually much cheaper than walking into the shop on Saturday. Our concierge books equipment in advance for the whole group, so skis and boots are fitted and waiting, not something you queue for on the first morning.

Every OFF-PISTE stay includes a private transfer, timed to your actual flight. The cost depends on the distance and the size of the vehicle. Geneva is about 1½ hours from La Clusaz and about 3 hours from Tignes; we compare the routes in our guide to Geneva Airport.

The chalet is the biggest line item and the one that varies most, with the property, the season and the level of service. Christmas, New Year and the February holidays cost more than a quiet January or March week; the calm weeks are in our guide to French school holidays. Linens and our core concierge service are included in the weekly rate. Daily housekeeping and a private chef can be added on request.

How it works in practice: a 30% deposit holds the dates, and the balance is due 60 days before arrival. A $10,000 security deposit is held separately and released after the stay. All the details are in our terms and conditions.

A private chalet reads differently from a hotel bill because it replaces several of them: rooms, most restaurant meals, a lounge for the whole group. For a family or a group of eight to fourteen, the per-person math often looks better than expected. A few costs are easy to forget: a few meals on the mountain, the New Year’s Eve dinner, a massage after a long day, the tip for the chef. None is large on its own. We cover tipping and paying in euros in our guide to money in France.
